Charlie Day Hangs Out With a Crazy Pirate and Rides a Bear in DirecTV’s Silly New Campaign

Work from BBDO promotes NFL Sunday Ticket

There aren’t many actors who could strum a bacon-wrapped guitar as if it’s a perfectly normal thing to do. Leave it to Charlie Day—probably best known for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia where he brings humanity and truth to comedically debasing his character Charlie Kelly—who makes goofy, weird visual gags land with ease in DirecTV’s latest campaign.

The two new 30-second spots from BBDO promote DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket package. Day is joined by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in one spot and will be paired with other NFL stars like Pittsburg Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown and Atlanta Falcons linebacker Vic Beasley in the coming weeks.

“The DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket ads are known for being light-hearted and humorous,” explained a rep for AT&T via email. “Charlie is a well-known comedian and actor recognized by audiences for his sense of humor and fun-loving personality. He’s naturally likeable—someone you’d want to hang out with to watch a football game. We felt he was the perfect representative for the voice of NFL fans.”

The campaign will run on television and in print. BBDO recently tapped another celebrity, Michael B. Jordan, to tout DirecTV’s streaming capabilities, but those ads are primarily digital, according to the rep.
