Hum by Verizon takes the drama out of driving by dramatically reading online reviews

Online reviews, while often helpful to consumers, can sometimes be a bit dull to read. Hum by Verizon, a connected car device that gives drivers insights about their vehicle and their driving experience, adds some thespian zing to those reviews by having a dramatic actor read them.

‘Take the Drama out of Driving,’ by Rokkan, injects a humorous dose of theater into less-than-dramatic reviews from real Hum users to show that Hum does exactly what it’s designed to: keep the drama out of driving.

Whether it’s flat tire assistance on a busy highway, clarity about why the ‘check engine’ light is on, or simply the comfort of knowing you’re never alone on the road, Hum ensures drivers are prepared for the unexpected on the road.

In the spots, we see an actor, clad in black against a black backdrop. He is assisted by a sound effects person and sidekick as he digs in with Shakesperean zeal, adding verve to phrases like, “I was stuck on a local highway with a flat tire,” and “My car battery was getting weak.” He does a particularly fine speed-read of a run-on review by ‘Tony.’

By pairing straight-forward and unedited reviews with the actor’s profound gravitas and deadpan humor, the sincere quality of satisfied Hum customers becomes the star of the show and the focus is clearly on how the technology can help people in need.

The campaign includes six mini-episodes and additional shorter spots to be rolled out via OLA, social, digital and ROS partnerships.

This campaign follows up a campaign by Rokkan done for the product last year that featured adorable mini horses. It returns to a more comedic tone taken by the first campaign for the technology.
