LA-based Third Street Mining Company signs director Thomas Kloss for commercial representation. Kloss comes to Third Street Mining Company from DNA, where he was represented for four years. A highly sought-after cinematographer for films, commercials and music videos, Kloss has been directing for four years and has done spots for such top brands as Target, BMW, Blockbuster, Maybelline, Saturn and JELLO, to name a few. As a director of photography, Kloss has worked on spots for leading brands including Verizon, Honda, Nike, Jaguar, Dr. Pepper and Chevy and feature films such as the Universal/Imagine produced Fear, starring Marc Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon and the Warner Bros.-produced Showtime, starring Eddie Murphy and Robert DeNiro. Kloss has garnered considerable attention from his cinematography, being recognized in 2001 as a Music Video Production Association winner for Best Cinematography for the Backstreet Boys music video, “The Call,” directed by Francis Lawrence, in 2000 as a MVPA winner for Best Cinematography for Madonna’s “Beautiful Stranger” music video, directed by Brett Ratner, and as a 1998 AICP Honoree for Cinematography for “Showtime Promo” directed by Marcus Nispel.

Says Third Street Mining Company Executive Producer John LaChapelle, “I’ve known Thomas socially for a long time, and I noticed he always left the party early, so I knew immediately he had to be a smart man. He’s a director/DP and that’s a huge asset these days. We plan on having a lot of fun and doing some great work. He’s perfectly poised for our industry right now.” Notes Kloss, “I’ve know TMC’s Neil Tardio for a long time and have always enjoyed working with him as a director. Neil and John are extremely driven and positive and I’m eager to be a part of a solid team that is constantly growing.”

Austria-native Kloss was raised the son of a news photographer, forging some of his most formative childhood memories carrying camera bags and tripods on location to important political gatherings, breaking news stories and sporting events. Starting off by helping out a friend, Kloss dove into working full time as a cinematographer in commercials and German television without any formal training. After many successful years working as a cinematographer in Germany, his interest in creative diversity led him to California in 1989 where he began shooting music videos for such top talent as Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Jennifer Lopez, Sheryl Crow, Aerosmith and Will Smith, to name a few. Boasting such high-profile cinematography credits, Kloss organically made the transition to director four years ago and has worked with celebrity talent for spots with Jenny Craig and Asience Hair Products as well as spots for such top agencies as Young & Rubicam, Deutsch, DDB, BBDO, TBWA and Leo Burnet, to name a few. Kloss has also served as a director to music videos for the Pussycat Dolls, New Kids on the Block, Marilyn Manson, Train and Emmy Rossum.

ABOUT THIRD STREET MINING COMPANY

When not venturing around the country shooting acclaimed spots and web films for global brands like Sears, Domino’s Pizza, 7-Eleven, Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Coors Light, 3rd Street Mining Company (3MC) co-founders Neil Tardio and Executive Producer John LaChapelle can be found in remote corners of California racing vintage sports cars at breakneck speed. Or more accurately, racing soundly in the middle of the pack. However, as a production company, 3MC is a well-oiled machine at the front of the pack; they’re lean and agile, but powerful and efficient. Combining a decades-long track record of award-winning work with a handpicked list of filmmakers, 3MC is driven by the size of the creative challenge, not the size of the budget. In this regard, size does matter.

Recently, 3MC and director Neil Tardio’s work on the Domino’s “Show Us Your Pizza” campaign won a 2011 Silver Clio.
