Production studio Reel FX takes home a VR Fest 2017 Online Film & Game Competition award for Best Live Action Music Video with their Umphrey’s McGee 360 VR: Puppet String concert video. The competition, presented by PassmoreVR, XTC and the Nevada Film Commission, promoted finalist voting taken from online nominations through the month of December, concluding with the festival run on January 7, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV.

The experimental VR experience–filmed on April 20, 2016 during the Umphrey’s McGee live tour–premiered at the Austin Music Video Festival, where it was nominated for best interactive video along with The Weekend/Eminem, Run the Jewels and Santigold. Mixed in spatial audio, the audience is given unprecedented access to the band’s performance of “Puppet String” from a unique 360° fan perspective, which is otherwise impossible to experience.

You can watch the video on Samsung VR using Gear VR, or Oculus Rift and HTC Vive using Virtual Desktop. Viewers using Chrome or the YouTube 360° app can either look around or strap on a VR headset like Google Cardboard with headphones to enhance the essence of their aggressive musical prowess.
