L.A.-based Wondros filmmaker Mark Pellington serves up cinema-level thrills, directing the pilot for ABC’s anticipated mid-season drama, Red Widow.  A famed filmmaking everyman with award-winning features, commercials and music videos under his belt, the hour-long pilot is Pellington’s return to TV after last stepping in as director and consulting producer on the beloved crime drama, Cold Case.  Slated to air in early 2013, Red Widow takes audiences deep inside the world of Bay Area organized crime, showing just how far a recently widowed woman (Radha Mitchell) will go to protect her family.

Pellington was eager to put his creative stamp on the pilot, defining the show’s visual style and tone of performances.  Says the director, “Pilots must plant the story and characters firmly in the audience’s mind.  It’s a fun creative challenge.  This series is incredibly compelling and it was an honor to help bring it to life.”  Pellington’s feature films include Henry Poole Is Here, also starring Radha Mitchell, U2 3D, Arlington Road and I Melt With You.  He has helmed commercials for such top brands as Gatorade, McDonald’s and Lowe’s, and directed legendary music videos for the likes of Pearl Jam, Michael Jackson, U2 and Bruce Springsteen.

Based on the popular Dutch series Penoza, Red Widow’s teleplay is by Melissa Rosenberg (Dexter and screenwriter of the Twilight franchise), executive-produced by Rosenberg, Howard Klein (The Office, Parks & Recreation), Endemol Studios and Alon Aranya.

In Red Widow, a dedicated mother and mob wife discovers a tenacity she never knew she had when she takes on gangsters and the FBI to unveil the truth about her husband’s murder.  As she digs into a dark underworld, testing her own strength, she relies on her resourcefulness and family ties like never before.
