Los Angeles-based Boxer Films has signed noted up-and-coming director Dawn Garcia for commercial representation.  The helmer is fresh out of UCLA School of Theater Film and Television’s Directing Program, where her “PALs” short film won a coveted Director’s Spotlight Award and her first-ever film produced in the program, “The Castle,” premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival.  Post-graduation, her music videos, Destroyer’s “Kaputt” and When Saints Go Machine’s “Add Ends,” have been featured in publications across the globe, including Rolling Stone Magazine’s Hot List, Pitchfork and Paste Magazine.  Pitchfork’s Ryan Dombal said of “Kaputt”: “This video does a great job of being both abstract and narrative, which can be a tough balance… most bands and directors can go whole careers without producing something as winningly imaginative as what these folks came up with.”

Additionally, Garcia is developing her “PALs” short into a feature with Oscar®-winning producer Tom Nunan (Crash, Employee of the Month, Thumbsucker, and The Illusionist).

Says Boxer EP Beth George, “Dawn is already a notable figure in a new generation of filmmakers.  Her work is like nothing you’ve ever seen: wildly imaginative, yet human.  We can’t wait to help build what we believe is going to be a diverse and exciting career.”

Adds Garcia, “I love short-form filmmaking.  It forces you to be very strategic with use of imagery and performance.  Boxer is an expert in this world and I feel incredibly well-supported there.”

Raised in an eclectic family of Los Angeles artists, the director developed her singular brand of visual storytelling early on.  Says Garcia, “My mom is a sculptor and my dad was in undercover law enforcement… very different worlds that I’m sure inspire my fascination with visual art and dramatic tension.”  After studying theater at the Los Angeles County High School for the Performing Arts, Garcia went on to manage—and subsequently create a cult following around—the historic Palace Theatre in downtown L.A.  There, she staged variety shows, concerts and film festivals, becoming a significant player in the downtown art scene.  With a background in what some have called ‘DIY theater’ and a deep respect for the actor’s process, Garcia was accepted to the UCLA’s School of Theater Film and Television where she found her true calling: filmmaking.

The director is also a visual artist of some repute, with a tarot card deck she created exhibiting at the EXILO Studio, Los Angeles in late summer.  One of these customized tarot cards was used for experimental rock band Deerhoof’s Green Cosmos album cover.

Her work is often surreal, punctuated by ‘wow’ images, but with sophisticated humor and emotion firmly grounded in reality.  Continues Garcia, “I trained classically in theater starting at a very young age.  Performance is king.  I love when sci-fi films with VFX can still prioritize truthful behavior and rich character development.  Someone once described a short of mine as ‘Cassavetes with robots.’  I’m kinda proud of that.”
