Los Angeles-based Boxer Films has added director Jonathan Hyde to its roster.  An experienced visual effects artist/designer, Hyde comes to Boxer after spending the past three years working as a freelance director, partnering with top VFX houses including Logan, Gentleman Scholar, Laundry, Roger, and Royale.  Hyde casts a surrealistic eye on the seemingly mundane in commercial projects for top brands including Porsche and Levi’s.  His first spot with Boxer was the visually nostalgic Pentax :40 “Memories”.  Upcoming work includes a campaign for Yoplait out of Bromley.  Hyde was also recently selected to participate in SHOOT’s 2012 New Directors Showcase in the middle of the month.

Notes EP Beth George, “When we first looked at Jonathan’s work we were all taken by how lyrical it feels; unusual in that it is somehow light, and at the same time, inspirational.” Adds Hyde, “I knew that it would be a good fit with Boxer—they really get it and at the end of the day they just want to make creative work.  They are very supporting of my creative vision and they are very interested in bolstering their roster talent.”

Born in Waitsfield, Vermont, Hyde went to film school at Concordia University in Montreal.  Feeling that he wasn’t quite pretentious enough to hang with the art students, he departed after two years to work as a designer/director at Montreal-based motion design shop Frame Studio.  After two years, he left for Germany where he worked as a VFX designer/director for METAphrenie in Berlin.  After two years, he moved to Buenos Aires where he freelanced as a VFX designer/director for top clients in commercial and broadcast including Adidas, Nissan, VW, Heineken, Toyota, Nickelodeon, TBS and Fox.  In 2010, Hyde moved to Los Angeles and began working with top VFX shops.  He dove headfirst into live-action directing with the memory-rousing :60 “Go Forth” for Levi’s, direct-to-client.  The project came to him after being chosen as a creative collaborator with the L.A. chapter of Levi’s Film Workshops, a series of community-based venues dedicated to creative production and collaboration.  With the initiative’s support, Hyde directed and produced the two visually enticing shorts “Chronos” and “The Color,” which were screened at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA during the Art in the Street Exhibition.
