BRW USA, Los Angeles director Dinh Thai uncovers the contagious gratification discovered through career fulfillment in a new 3:30 web film “Pringle” for Navy Life out of GlobalHue, Detroit.  The web film highlights Commander Katrina Pringle’s experiences as a pediatric nurse for the Navy.  The affecting docu-style web film is part of a web series including three additional short web films: “Atienza” highlights Lieutenant Frederick Atienza’s quest for balance through martial arts; “Jenkins” follows Lieutenant Dalone Jenkins’ professional success through a solid family foundation; “Adams” features Lieutenant Nehkonti Adams’ unexpected career development, working her way up from the bottom to a medical professional over a 20+ year career with the Navy.

The web series, “Beyond the Call,” will be featured on the U.S. Navy Life and U.S. Navy Latinos Facebook pages and reaches out to those who may not be aware of the wealth of career opportunities available through the Navy.  Rather than focusing on their work while they are serving, the campaign highlights the work of these Officers away from their bases and ships, allowing a look into the honor and integrity they continue to maintain in their everyday lives. Each Officer’s background may be diverse, but through the Navy they have been able to reach achievements they never thought possible and give back to their communities, while also serving their country.

No stranger to documentary format, Dinh was chosen for this project upon recognition from his short video of Baxter Humby that recounts how the one-armed boxer was able to tackle both his physical disability and the harassment of others to become the only man in the world to win world titles with only one hand.

The Navy web series was shot over four days in San Diego, CA.  Dinh made the most of his limited time by utilizing two cameras to capture the most footage possible.  He used a RED Epic to capture more dramatic shots and while he set up for these grander shots, he captured lifestyle shots using a Canon C300.  The combination allowed him to be continually shooting, capturing the ample amount of footage needed to tell the stories of the real people featured in the campaign.

In order to capture the most genuine footage, Dinh pre-interviewed the Officers prior to the shoot, allowing him to not only brief them on the outline of the story, but also allow them time to craft the way they would most honestly convey their own experiences.  He notes, “Our Officers had many touching stories, but I wanted to find out which of their experiences related to their real life decisions and successes.  The pre-interview gave us a chance to explore and reminisce on their pasts as well as become friends, which in turn made our interview more conversational.”  Each video covers how the individuals’ pasts have led them to a career in the Navy, who they are and who they are affecting as members of the Navy, and who they are trying to become through the opportunities and resources available to them through the Navy.

Creative Director Robin Hendrickson adds, “Dinh was great at putting our Officers at ease on camera and getting them to open up about things that they might have felt embarrassed to them—talking about themselves.  These folks are all amazing individuals with great stories, and I think Dinh delivered exactly what was needed.”
