New York-based post production boutique Northern Lights assistant editor Lisa White transforms the angelic Rachel McAdams into a bone-chilling predator in this recut of “The Notebook” trailer that took home top prize at the 2011 AICE Camp Kuleshov contest.
The contest required the competitors to choose from among one of the following films: “Madonna: Truth or Dare,” “Grease,” “The Notebook,” “Bride of Frankenstein,” “The Absent-Minded Professor,” “Splash,” “Kiss Me Deadly,” “The Boost,” “Breathless,” “The Manchurian Canidate,” “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdone,” “Beyond The Valley of The Dolls,” and “Cheers,” and either edit a :90 trailer for the film in a different genre, edit a :60 commercial for one of the films as a network sitcom, or edit a :90 trailer mashup of two of the films promoting the “mashed up” film as a film of a third genre.
The trailer opens with an eerie piano melody intercutting spookified shots from “The Notebook.” The voiceover begins with a raspy southern voice narrating a chilling poem, “Everyone knew that Allie wasn’t right. She cried in the morning, she cried in the night. She saw things that others didn’t see. And heard strange whispers at a quarter to three. They didn’t understand her, didn’t think they should. And ran her out of town as good people would.” We see shots of Allie’s apparent funeral and a blood-hued image of her now barren dwelling as the voiceover continues, “There’s an old story about evil suppressed, that even when it dies it never really rests.” We cut to the darkened images of an aged Allie as the voiceover dauntingly states, “But this story isn’t over. From ashes to dust she came back to visit.” Images of Allie’s young life move rapidly as a collection of whispered voices finish, stating, “But now, she’s one of us.” As a man’s body dramatically hits the ground, the trailer wraps with a bloody title image of “The Notebook”.
