Facebook Live was the site chosen for the launch of the new video for Chance the Rapper’s Grammy-nominated Coloring Book track “Same Drugs,” directed by Park Pictures’ Jake Schreier. “Same Drugs” features vocals from Eryn Allen Kane, Yebba, John Legend, Francis Starlite and Macie Stewart. To the joy of those who missed the live premiere, the video was later posted on the artist’s YouTube channel.
The new music video features the artist seated at a white piano on a brightly lit pink stage, beside a life-size, pastel colored and bespeckled female puppet, who leans against him as he sings the nostalgic lyrics about growing apart from a female friend. Soon the puppet joins in the song singing Eryn Allen Kane’s verse, then ultimately falls off the piano bench as he rises to sing the outro by himself.
The video concludes with Chance the Rapper standing on the stage singing, startled by the snowflakes that have started falling all around him. He strides off stage and moves through the recording studio, where similarly colorful puppets are controlling the sound stage and recording consoles.
Jake Schreier, also an award-winning film director, has directed numerous music videos for Francis and the Lights including “Friends” (2016) and also directed “Trust Nobody” for Cashmere Cat (2016).
“Same Drugs” drops in advance of Chance the Rapper’s expected performance at the 59th Grammy Awards next week, where he is nominated for seven Grammys.
