Taking a #3DSelfie

Taking a #3DSelfie

3D Printing technology may not be a “new” trend this year at SXSW, but it is certainly becoming more tangible (pun intended) for a more mainstream client base. Now, 3D technology is not just for the tech nerds among us, but for anyone; 3D printing is used for everything from prototypes to Oreo cookies. Shapeways is an online marketplace and community where you can make, buy and sell 3D printed products. At a Havas event, I got to experience the process firsthand when I was given an opportunity to take a #3DSelfie to create my own 3D-printed doppelganger. As I waited for my turn to get scanned, I gawked over the fun rubber earrings that the Shapeways spokesperson was wearing, but was even more impressed with the silver rings on her fingers that were as solid as any of my own and were crafted by a 3D printer.

When it was my turn, I stood on a box and struck a pose as I was scanned to create my own 3D file. In less than a minute, I was able to see my rendering on the computer. Since their printing facility is in New York City, I input my e-mail and look forward to being able to have my #3DSelfie sent to LA in a couple of weeks!

On the site, you can purchase fun goods from quirky art to a mug shaped like a bulldozer. You can turn your own designs into a 3D reality of plastic, stainless steel, or ceramic by uploading an accepted 3D file format. Think you’ve got a great design, but want to be able to actually get your hands on it? Try it out for yourself.

The Havas event @SXSW turned out to be worthwhile for the same reason a lot of things at SXSW are relevant — taking quirky and “novel” technology out of the theoretical realm and into the prism of personal experience. Suddenly 3D printing technology seems much more viable to the average consumer than I had ever thought. Leaving me with one burning question: What should I print next?
